About

What this tool does

Name check is a free, preliminary screen for a product name: it helps you find possible name conflicts, risks, and similar products. It is not legal advice or trademark clearance. A promising result does not mean a name is safe to use.

Results reflect the sources you review and the ratings you choose. Check official registries or ask a qualified professional before making important decisions. What is sent where: Privacy. The rules: Terms of use.

What it asks of a name

The lookups come in five parts, each a question. Inside a part, sections split the lookups by country, language or kind of product, so you can exclude what doesn't apply to you.

Where it fits in naming

Naming a product usually goes through these steps:

  1. Brief: who the product is for, which markets, what the name must do.
  2. Generate: many candidates, by hand, with a team or with AI.
  3. Knockout: drop the candidates with obvious conflicts — the name already in use, a trademark, a taken .com. This is where Name check works.
  4. Deeper screen: trademarks by class of goods and country, a native speaker, saying the name aloud. Name check's Legal and Language parts give you the starting points.
  5. Test: show the shortlist to customers.
  6. Legal clearance: a trademark attorney's full search and opinion.
  7. Secure: file the trademark and register the domains, accounts and company name before you announce. The Domains and Accounts parts list where.
  8. Launch.

Name check helps with the knockout and the start of the deeper screen. It does not replace legal clearance.
